Granite is a great material for stone work, It is a hard, resiliant material and will not succumb to the harsh New England weather. It is acid, salt, and frost resistant and will outperform all other stones. Cape Ann granite is one of my favorite stone to work with  and it is sourced locally from the Gloucester and Rockport area. Granite is aboundant in the North East and many kinds of granite are available from the quarries in the region.
